SOHO 500 is a specialty retail center on a neighborhood scale. The renovation was based on the adaptation of an existing prefabricated Butler metal warehouse erected in the 1970’s that most recently housed a photography studio and crematory business storefront. The owners provided a simple program for the 6,000 square foot structure - create up to six one thousand square foot retail spaces with high ceilings and large window openings associated with pre-war brick warehouses that have been converted for retail or residential use. Renovation of the existing structure dictated the building footprint and parking layout. The goal was to respond to the client’s wishes, providing retail space unique to the area, and to reflect and add to the emerging context of the SOHO district.
